The Canterlot Library was the only building Nightmare Moon tried to preserve. The gardens had gone almost immediately—much to that animal lover’s dismay—and the rest of the city wasn’t worth her time unless there were rebels hiding in it. The royal palace was mostly undamaged, if only because no enemy had ever reached it, but the library held something of value—knowledge. Nightmare’s powers were formidable, but it was her studies that really gave her an edge. She had learned everything about every town and city in Equestria just by reading the reports they used to send to her sister
Dragon's Den
“Thank you for coming on such short notice,” said Colonel Glade as Scootaloo and a very unhappy Gilda landed in the Dragon’s Den. He was large for a griffon, but his tail was a little too short. Gilda had told her once that he lost the end of his tail in a fight with a dragon, but Scootaloo didn’t know whether to believe her or not. “I know you’ve been busy training the new recruits, but I have an urgent mission for both of you.”
“Does it involve sleeping?” Gilda mumbled. She was a little steadier than before, but Scootaloo could tell a massive headache was on its w
Drinks
Yesterday, the bar had been filled with noisy newcomers, bright-eyed and eager to defend their home against Nightmare Moon. That was before Gilda and Scootaloo put them through training. Now, only a few were present, quietly complaining and stretching sore wings and limbs. “Do you ever wonder if you’re too hard on them on the first day?” Scootaloo asked between swigs of her apple cider.
“Tough love, Scoots. We gotta weed out the weak ones while we can, ‘cause we don’t want Nightmare Moon to do it for us,” Gilda replied, downing her fourth shot of some foul-smelling concoction she&rsq

The reporter lifted a fresh notebook from his saddle bag before asking his next question. “Luna, what do you miss the most?”
Luna let out a heavy sigh. “I miss a lot of things. I miss our old home in Everfree. To some extent, I miss the unwavering trust of my subjects. But I think of all the things I have lost, the one I miss the most is friendship.”
The reporter blinked. “Friendship, your highness?”
“Yes. I had many friends before I was banished. They looked up to and trusted me, and I betrayed them.”
“They never blamed you, Luna,” Celestia said. “No m

“Celestia, you’ve seen the development and evolution of the lore surrounding Nightmare Moon. Did the things ponies said about your sister ever bother you?”
“Yes, but not for the reason you think,” Celestia answered. “Much of what they say is true. What bothered me was that I knew a side of Luna few others did. I suppose you could say I knew the whole truth, not the partial truth everypony could see.”
“Did you ever harbor resentment toward your sister for what she did?”
Celestia was silent for a moment, and her gaze fell to the floor. “No,” she said at last.

“Something I have learned since my banishment is that love must be earned,” Luna said. “It takes effort and hard work and does not always come easily.”
“And how do you plan to win the heart of Equestria?”
Luna smiled and looked at the floor. “If I knew that, I would not have been banished in the first place.”
Rainbow Dash had a reputation for finding creative ways to enter buildings, but today, she decided to just use the front door. The library’s interior was strewn with books, as usual, and its keeper was sitting in the center, looking over four at once.

“What was it like returning to Equestria after so much time?” the reporter asked.
“It was… surprising,” Luna answered, thinking back to that fateful Sumer Sun Celebration. “Once Twilight Sparkle and her friends restored me to my proper state of mind, I expected to be locked away. Instead, I was made a guest of honor at the Celebration.”
“It was only right that our subjects become reacquainted with their princess of the night,” Celestia added.
Luna nodded. “My reception in Ponyville was unexpected, to say the least. I do not think they realized I was once the Nigh

The reporter cleared his throat as his pen came to a stop. “Luna, we’ve all heard the story of Nightmare Moon, but we’ve never had the chance to hear your side of the story—not publicly, anyway.”
“The legend is a fair retelling, as far as I can tell,” Luna replied. “Aside from the story of Nightmare Night, I have not found any significant errors.”
“If I may, princess, why did you become Nightmare Moon?”
Luna took a deep breath and bowed her head to hide her grimace. “I have reflected on this subject since I returned to Equestria, and I have come to the

The recording device whirred quietly while the reporter found a blank page in his notepad. “First off, I want to say what an honor it is to be here with you,” he said with a shaky smile.
“The pleasure is ours,” Celestia replied with a smile of her own, and she meant it. His background check had revealed his extensive experience and overall excellent reporting, though she was still puzzled as to why her aides had thought to include his recent divorce in their report. “I think I speak for both of us when I say this is something we want to share with all of Equestria.”

Griffon's Nest
Six months later
The Griffon’s Nest wasn’t literally a nest, but rather a codename for a camp hidden in a series of caves in the brownish mountains north of Equestria. It was home to a hundred or so griffon soldiers at any given time, so logically there were several nests in it, but it also held a training ground, a medical ward, a mess hall, and a forge. Captain Gilda was standing in the latter at the moment, waiting for the armor smith to finish fitting her with a new chest plate. “How much longer is this going to take?” she asked.
“Just a minute more,” the armor smith replied,

The Last Party (Carmine) - Review
Well, I managed to find "The Last Party" I was looking for, this one by Carmine. This was one of the first MLP fan fictions I read, and my reaction was, and still is, mixed. The plot of this "Last Party" is essentially what might have happened if the episode "Party of One" went horribly wrong. It takes a very grim look at Pinkie Pie's mental stability in the face of perceived betrayal. Her closest friends leave Ponyville to pursue their dreams, and Pinkie begins to think none of them ever liked her. I won't give away the ending, but if you're looking for a tear-jerker, this is probably a good one for you.
First, the good. I thought Carmine d
I've always been a bit skeptical of fan fiction, mostly because careless fans tend to get things wrong or just not write that well. As a fan and a writer, these things just get on my nerves and make it hard to enjoy the story. Fortunately, the MLP fandom seems to be more careful than others, and I've actually enjoyed most of the fan art and fan fiction I've come across. So I'm going to talk about some of the things I've liked and disliked in a few fan fictions, starting with "The Real Story," a comic by ~Nimaru, which has influenced me more than any other MLP fan creation so far.
"The Real Story" is the story of how Luna became Nightmare Moo
My middle school cafeteria was average, I guess. The floors and ceiling were off-white and dull, the walls were a brownish tan, and the tables and chairs were so entirely unremarkable that I can't recall anything unique about them. It served the usual selection of cafeteria food pizza-shaped rubber, filler burgers, and might-be-chicken sandwiches, all of it slathered in grease. Like most middle school guys I knew, I didn't much care what it was so long as it was warm and tasted vaguely like what it was supposed to resemble.
I had one friend, JJ, who would always buy pizza and dab the oily residue away with a stack of paper napkins, no

I stand by my bedroom window, craning my neck to see the sliver of sky visible between the roof and the tree line. Crickets sing somewhere nearby, crooning a soft serenade to the darkness as the stars slowly spin overhead, making their nightly pilgrimage across the cosmos. The full moon gazes down from its perch, illuminating the earth with its pale glow. The trees whisper to each other with the passing of a breeze. A noisy engine growls and gurgles a few streets over like a threatened animal trying to sound bigger than it is. It is a night like any other always quiet, but never silent.

Casey silently walked through the halls, trying to remember what she could leave in her locker and what she'd have to pull out. She'd already suffered through English, history, and chemistry, so those books could be left behind good thing, too, because they weighed a hundred pounds each. All she'd need was her math book and art supplies, and she'd be good to go.
As she approached her locker, she heard someone shouting. "Hey, you, new kid! Yeah, you! What's your problem, huh?"
The new kid must have muttered a reply, because Dirk was silent for a moment. "Yeah, I'll make sure you're sorry, punk."

Jack put his glasses on the desk with a sigh and rubbed his eyes, hoping to stave off sleep for a little while longer. He glanced once more at the seashell beside him, wondering what was taking her so long. He wasn't worried. He knew Rachel was busy, and he couldn't expect her to drop everything just to check in with him, but he felt like talking to someone, and talking to her always made him feel better. Still, it was getting late, and he knew he needed a good night's rest. Just a few more minutes, he told himself. If not, there's always tomorrow.

Silver moonlight reflected off the lake's glassy surface, disturbed only by the occasional ripple. A lone weeping willow swayed gently in the summer breeze, branches waving across the lake at the two figures sitting side by side on the opposite shore. The two were laughing softly, trying not to think about what would happen in half an hour's time, hoping desperately that the clocks would take pity and allow this moment to last forever. They knew with undeniable certainty that their time together would soon be over, and that they would not see each other for an indefinite amount of time. But for now, they had a half-hour before cruel fat

A lot of people go through something that changes their lives. It could be winning an award, losing a loved one, or a lot of other things. For me, the experience I want to talk about is a little more complicated than that, and I hope that I can explain it to you through this essay.
When I was twelve, my dad died of lung cancer. It was a really hard time for me and my mom. I was always close to my dad. We used to go on camping trips together, and I loved him more than anyone else. It was really hard for me when he died, and fortunately I had

Applejack wasn't sure what Twilight was talking about, but she knew the unicorn needed her help, and as she took her place beside her newest friend, she knew she wasn't going to back down now. The little piles of stone at Nightmare Moon's hooves began to glow with a mysterious light, much to the dark mare's bewilderment. "Applejack, who reassured me when I was in doubt, represents the spirit of Honesty!" Twilight continued. Several stones began circling the orange earth pony, glowing with a strange orange light.
Twilight continued to highlight each pony's strengths, from Flutter
I first started writing when I was in 5th grade. My teacher challenged us to write a short story based on a picture. I wrote a novel. Since then, I've been writing creative short stories and novels. I've also developed an interest in journalism and creative nonfiction. I enjoy good art and music, and I often make my own piano arrangements of songs I like.

I usually ignore journal posts on my dA account, since most of them are art contests and my drawing skills have never progressed beyond "advanced stickman." But then I saw this one from Lauren Faust titled How bad do you want to name an alligator Gummy?, and I decided to check it out.
So here's the quick story if you haven't heard. The Wildlife Learning Center is an LA-based animal rescue operation that takes in animals that are injured, abused, or otherwise in need of assistance and a home. The center has been struggling financially and is asking for donations. Faust apparently has connection and, knowing of her large brony following, worke

So if you've spent any amount of time on the internet, you've probably heard of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic or bronies or seen pony pictures and wondered what the big deal is. Well, that's what happened to me, anyway. After several months of seeing pony comments and pony pictures and pony-related videos, I decided to see what all the fuss was about, and since every episode can be found on YouTube, I didn't have to worry about people wondering why I was watching a little girl show about talking ponies and friendship.
Yeah. You might be able to see where this is going.
Now, to be honest, I wasn't really sure what to expect. I remembe
